About us

Joe NewDr. Joseph Elmalem, BSc, OD Dr Elmalem has been proudly serving the York region community since 1994.   He is a graduate of the University of Waterloo and earned his Doctorate of Optometry Degree from the State University of New York, State College of Optometry in 1993.  He was recognized by his peers and faculty for his clinical performance by being awarded the Louis Herrmann Memorial Award for outstanding and compassionate care as well the Ciba Vision award for outstanding performance in Contact lenses.  Dr Elmalem subsequently went on to complete a Binocular Vision  and Visual Perception Residency at the State College of Optometry, specializing in Strabismus (crossed eyes), Amblyopia (lazy eyes) and learning related disorders. Dr Elmalem has been  a member of The College of Optometrists of Ontario since 1993  and has his Therapeupics certification  for ocular diseases by The College Of Optometrists.  His passion for helping those in need is exemplified by his participation in many Vision Van events and Gift of Sight missions to Morocco and the Dominican Republic.

When not in the office, Joe enjoys playing golf, listening to music traveling with his family and is an avid sports fan.

Karen copyDr. Karen Feng, BSC, OD Dr. Feng has been an associate at Dr. Elmalem and Associates since 2009. She is more committed than ever to giving patients the care they need to maintain good vision and ocular health. She typically performs thorough, comprehensive eye exams to patients ages 3 and above, but her skills extend beyond primary care. Dr. Feng is experienced in fitting contact lenses of all types, assessing colour vision for work purposes, performing ministry of transport and police force application eye exams, and seeing laser refractive and cataract surgery pre-operative and post-operative patients. Dr Karen Feng is a member of the Ontario College of Optometrists and is licensed Feng Since graduating from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry in 2007, Dr. Feng has practiced optometry in a variety of settings. She worked in Calgary, Alberta for two years before returning to her hometown of Toronto in 2009.  She now spends most of her professional time at Dr. Elmalem’s Richmond Hill location in Hillcrest Mall.  When she isn’t caring for  people’s eyes, Karen loves to travel, scuba dive, play volleyball, and spend time with her family and friends.

holly copyDr. Holly Ma, BSc, OD Dr Holly Ma is a member of the College of Optometrists of Ontario. She received her Honours Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Optometry degrees from the University of Waterloo in 1994. She completed her Therpaeutics Pharmaceutical Agents certification in 2009 .  Dr Ma has been an associate with Dr Elmalem in the Newmarket and Richmond Hill clinics since 1995.  She is proud to have provided comprehensive eye care to families in these communities over the many years. In her spare time Dr Ma enjoys spending time with her family, including her 3 children and volunteering in their schools and programs. She also enjoys skiing, reading and shares her love of music and  piano with her family.

Dr. Marli Shelson, BSc, OD

Dr. Marli Shelson completed an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Life Sciences at McMaster University in 2008. She then earned her Doctor of Optometry at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 2012. In Florida, Dr. Shelson completed her clinical internships at the Center for Better Vision, specializing in pediatrics and binocular vision, and the Eye Centers of South Florida, a multi-disciplinary ophthalmological and optometric practice. Dr. Shelson has volunteered at the Special Olympics in Orlando, Florida, providing vision screenings for the athletes. She is a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists and College of Vision Development. Dr. Shelson believes that patient education and disease prevention are vital to enhancing and maintaining  healthy eyes and clear vision.  By taking time to get to know her patients, she is able to counsel them according to their unique health and vision requirements.

Alice1Dr. Alice Tam-Go, Bsc, OD Dr. Alice Tam is a graduate of The School of Optometry program at The University of Waterloo and has been practicing since 2006. Dr. Tam did her internship in Pinellas Park, FL, where she gained invaluable experience by working alongside numerous ophthalmologists that specialized in areas of the cornea, retina, cataracts, and glaucoma. As a previous contact lens wearer herself (soft contacts and RGPs), Dr. Tam has a special interest in contact lens fitting. She attended The Vision Institute in Jacksonville, FL, and completed the specialty contact lenses fitting program. In her spare time, Dr. Tam enjoys spending time with her family, travelling, and attending fitness classes.
